Within the Wilderness Leadership Program, my peers and I spent our winter months working on mountaineering and backcountry touring skill sets. During our mountaineering section, we traveled north of Pemberton, BC to a hut in the Joffre Mountains. From there, we spent our days covering crevasse travel, rescue, and mountaineering skills.
During our ski touring section, we ventured into the mountains behind Squamish and around Whistler, BC. Over this period, I gained my AST-1, AST-2, and CAA Operations Level 1. These certificates have been a great starting point and have provided me with a rich amount of valuable knowledge and skills that I continue to practice and build on. Although I am confident with what I have learned, I am still quite cautious with my skills in the backcountry. This is because the most important aspects of backcountry safety come from experience in the field first hand and with experienced mentors.
